CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WARNING SIGNS

What the light means

The light itself does not tell you how serious the problem is. These distinctions do.

  • Solid light, car driving normally — have it checked, but it is not an emergency
  • Flashing light — stop driving. This usually indicates an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter within minutes
  • Rough idle or shaking at a stop
  • Hesitation when accelerating
  • A drop in fuel economy
  • Hard starting
  • The light appeared and your Texas inspection is due

Texas Drivers

Don’t Let a Warning Light Hold You Back

An illuminated check engine light is an automatic failure on the Texas state inspection, so the light and the sticker often become one problem. We diagnose, repair and re-verify, and we will tell you honestly whether the repair is required for the inspection or simply advisable.

A code is not a diagnosis

FREE

- we scan the codes and explain what they mean, in plain language rather than a parts list

FREE

— a digital inspection with photos sent to your phone, so you can see the condition of the whole vehicle while it is here

Code points to a system, not a part.

A code names a system, not a failed part. The same code can point to several very different repairs at very different prices

Full diagnosis

- quoted and approved before we begin — is where we test that system with live data to find the actual failure

Written quote before any repair

Either way, a written quote before any repair, with anything non-urgent marked clearly

What it costs

The free scan tells you which system reported a fault, and it costs you nothing here. The full diagnosis is separate work — usually an hour or more of a technician testing that system with live data and a scope to find the part that actually failed. There is a charge for it, we quote it before we begin, and nothing happens until you approve it. We charge for it because it stands on its own: the findings are yours in writing, and you are free to take them anywhere. Financing on repairs is available through Affirm, Synchrony, Sunbit, EasyPay and Koalifi.

"This place has the right mind in getting customer in and out. I normally take my ford to the dealer and wait two hours for a simple oil change.  I love that I get to come here and be done with 30 minutes sometime (have two cars being serviced). Way to go crew! Y’all are awesome and very professional."

Questions

Georgetown - CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FAQ

  • Is it safe to drive with the light on?

If it is steady and the car drives normally, usually yes — drive it to us. If it is flashing, stop driving and call us.

  • Will it fail Texas state inspection?

Yes. An illuminated check engine light is an automatic emissions failure in Texas.

  • Is the scan really free?

Yes. We scan the codes at no charge, explain what they mean, and include a free digital inspection with photos. No obligation to have anything done.

  • What is the difference between the free scan and the paid diagnosis?

The scan reads the fault the computer stored. The diagnosis finds which part actually failed, and that usually takes an hour or more of testing. The same code can point to a small repair or a large one.

  • Does the full diagnosis cost anything?

Yes. The scan and the inspection are free; the full diagnosis is separate work that carries a charge. It depends on the system and how much testing is required, so we quote it up front and nothing begins until you approve it. No surprises at pickup.

  • How long does it take?

Most diagnoses are same day. Intermittent faults sometimes take longer and we will say so up front.

  • Do you offer a shuttle or a ride?

Please call us at (737) 321-1177 to ask about available transportation options. Our team can let you know what arrangements may be available during your visit.
